More pointy headed technical stuff

As with all of our DVD products, two main reasons to consider having Organic Media produce your remembrance disc are our DVD expertise and our top notch equipment. The audio and video quality found on desktop computer DVD creation tools, and prosumer video equipment, can produce disappointing results due to the high compression (shrinking the file sizes) involved in making DVD’s—coupled with laying one type of compression on top of another.

In particular, the consumer DV camcorders so popular now make capturing excellent quality video within reach of almost everyone shooting video today. However the compression/decompression employed by these camcorders and most video editing software, referred to in industry jargon as “the DV codec”, does not yield particularly good results when used with low cost DVD creation tools.

These tools lay the highly compressed MPEG-2 compression scheme used by DVD, on top of the already substantial compression of the DV codec scheme used by the cameras and editing equipment. Many times the image quality is substantially lower than your original tape, with noticeable motion artifacts and macroblocking detracting from your video subject matter. Compatibility can also be a big issue with low cost DVD creation tools, as they are often ill suited to make discs that will play across the broad cost and feature spectrum of playback equipment people will be using to play their discs.
