You’ve probably seen how popular DVD’s have become in a short period of time. These discs will far outlast any video tape ever made. Because the foundation of video tape containing the information layer is a thin, flexible material, it will shrink, stretch, or otherwise deteriorate over time, causing diminished playback performance and eventually rendering the signal on the tape unusable. A DVD can be played repeatedly for decades on end without noticeable degradation...the player itself will fail long before the disc does.
